Vision

To fully understand complex phenomena in the sciences it is necessary to analyse data not only at a single scale but at multiple scales. The complex interplay of geometry (focusing on individual structures in data) and topology (focusing on the overall ‘shape’ of data) leads to greater insights, accelerates scientific discovery, and ultimately helps us achieve more comprehensive descriptions of highly complex systems.

Our group develops novel methods that leverage recent advances in geometrical and topological machine learning in order to address pressing challenges in biomedicine and healthcare.

We are not just interested in improving the state of the art - we want to understand and improve the predictive performance of modern machine learning models in order to increase their robustness and reliability. Application

Your application should consist of a single PDF file containing:

  • A curriculum vitae (including any research outputs and, optionally, the contact details of two referees)
  • A motivation letter (max. 1 page) that details why you are interested in this position and briefly discusses your long-term research vision
  • Relevant transcripts from your studies (such as diploma/degree certificates)

The starting date is envisaged to be early 2022.

What Awaits You

As a member of our group, you will be able to conduct both foundational machine learning research and pursue practical applications in a highly interdisciplinary setting. Regardless of whether you are more interested in theory or in practice, you will have plenty of flexibility to choose your research projects according to your preferences.

We can offer you an exciting mixture of creative thinking and brainstorming, literature research, mathematical discussions, followed by actually implementing and reifying your ideas. Our research addresses real-world challenges while resting on firm theoretical foundations.

If you are a creative thinker with unorthodox ideas, you will fit right in! We are located at the Helmholtz Center Munich, which focuses broadly on health and biomedical applications. It provides a fantastic environment to tackle scientifically and socially relevant questions in the context of ML for healthcare.

Your qualifications

  • M.Sc (or comparable degree) in mathematics, computer science, statistics, physics, bioinformatics, or a related area
  • Strong mathematical abilities as well as some coding experience
  • An interest in continuous learning and impactful applications
