Research Associate

Applications are invited for the position of a postdoctoral Research Associate in the School of Mathematics at Cardiff University to work on the EPSRC-funded project `A new paradigm for spectral localisation of operator pencils and analytic operator-valued functions’.
 
This is a 3-year fixed-term post starting on 1st of January 2020, or as soon as possible thereafter. The successful candidate will work with Prof Marco Marletta. The project will involve collaboration with researchers in Bern and Durham.

Project Description

This proposal is based on new work on essential numerical ranges that has already allowed huge steps forward in the understanding of spectral approximation and spectral pollution for wide classes of partial differential operators, eliminating the usual hypotheses such as self-adjointness or perturbations thereof. The project will carry this research forward to embrace wide classes of operator-valued functions, allowing applications including rational pencils, Dirac and Maxwell systems, coupled PDEs arising in elasticity and hydromechanics, and quadratic numerical ranges.  We shall treat non-selfadjoint operators and nonlinear operator-valued analytic functions in ways that circumvent many of the technical difficulties these problems usually present, opening them up to generalisations of existing analytical and computational approaches.

This project is based in the Mathematical Analysis Group, which encompasses researchers with interests in operator theory, PDEs, homogenisation, kinetic theory and stochastic analysis. Candidates

Candidates with research expertise in spectral theory and closely related areas of mathematics are encouraged to apply. Applicants should have a record of or potential to produce research that reaches the highest standards of excellence in terms of originality, significance and rigour.

Candidates should have, or be close to completion of, a PhD in mathematics.

In their application, candidates should include a CV (including details of all publications, preprints and papers in preparation) and a short research statement.

This position is full-time, 35 hours per week, and is fixed-term for 36 months. The post is available from 1st January 2020 or a mutually agreed date thereafter.

Salary range: £33,797 – £40,322 per annum (Grade 6)

Main Functions

To conduct research within the scope of the EPSRC-funded project `A new paradigm for spectral localisation of operator pencils and analytic operator-valued functions’ and contribute to the overall research performance of the School and University, carrying out research leading to the publishing of work in high-quality journals. To pursue excellence in research and to inspire others to do the same.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Research

  • To conduct research within the scope of the EPSFC-funded project `A new paradigm for spectral localisation of operator pencils and analytic operator-valued functions’ and contribute to the research profile of the School and University by the production of measurable outputs, including publishing in international academic journals.
  • To collaborate with the project research partners at other universities and visit them when required.
  • To develop research objectives and proposals for own or joint research, including grant applications.
  • To attend and/or present work at conferences and seminars.
  • To undertake administrative tasks associated with the research project, including the planning and organisation of the project and the implementation of procedures required to ensure accurate and timely reporting.
  • To review and synthesise existing research literature within the field.
  • To participate in School research activities, including participation in the supervision of research students.
  • To build and create networks both internally and externally to the university, to influence decisions, explore future research requirements, and share research ideas for the benefit of research projects.
Other
  • To engage effectively with other academic institutions and learned societies to raise awareness of the School’s profile, to cultivate strategically valuable alliances, and to pursue opportunities for collaboration across a range of activities. These activities are expected to contribute to the School and the enhancement of its international profile.
  • To undergo appropriate personal and professional development to enhance performance of the role.

Person Specification

Essential Criteria

Qualifications and Education

1.   Postgraduate degree at PhD level (or nearing completion / submission) in a related subject area.
 
Knowledge, Skills and Experience

2.   An established expertise and proven portfolio of research, or proven academic  competence, within the following research fields:
(a) spectral theory, (b) differential equations and differential operators.

3.   Knowledge of current research in the specialist field and a wider knowledge of mathematical analysis.
4.   Proven ability to develop original techniques/methods in the specified research area.
5.   Proven ability to publish in high-quality journals.
6.   Knowledge and understanding of competitive research funding to be able to develop applications to funding bodies.

Communication and Team Working

7.   Proven ability to communicate new and complex information effectively, both verbally and in writing, engaging the interest and enthusiasm of the target audience
8.   Ability to work effectively in a team.

Other

9.   Ability to travel internationally and deliver high-quality scientific presentations.
 
Desirable Criteria

10. Some experience of scientific computing, e.g. in MATLAB, and of computational mathematics.

The School has six main research groups: Applied and Computational Mathematics; GAPT: Geometry, Algebra, Mathematical Physics and Topology; Mathematical Analysis; Mathematics Education; Operational Research; and Statistics.
