Specific designation

The recruitment takes place in one of the grades of the ZAP.

For recruitment in the grade of Docent, this takes place within the tenure track stystem: appointment as a docent for five years with a view to permanent tenure as a head docent after the expiry of this period pending favourable assessment of the orientation and integration period.

For recruitment in a different grade: appointment for three years with a view to fixed tenure in the same grade after the expiry of this term, pending favourable assessment of the orientation and integration period.

Teaching

The candidate will contribute to the bachelor and master program of mathematics, teaching 2 bachelor courses and 2 master courses:

  • Inleiding Groepentheorie (1Ba, 6SP)
  • Ring- en moduultheorie (2Ba, 6SP)
  • Associatieve algebra (Ma, 6SP)
  • Representatietheorie van algebra’s (Ma, 6SP, 2yearly)
  • Niet-commutatieve algebra (Ma, 6SP, 2yearly)

Over time the candidate will also be involved with teaching mathematics courses for students from other disciplines. It is also expected that the candidate will supervise bachelor, master and Ph.D. theses.

Research

We are looking for a candidate with expertise in the domain of algebra, in particular relating to the following subdomains:

  • Noncommutative algebraic geometry
  • Representation theory
  • Groups and grouprings
  • Hopf algebras
  • Linear algebra over finite fields
  • Yang-Baxter equation and (skew) braces

The candidate is required to have a strong research track record in one or more of the above disciplines, as proven by publications in high-ranking journals within the discipline. The candidate is also expected to have experience in obtaining research funding. Experience in computational algebra as well as algebraic software packages (such as GAP, Magma, ...) is especially valued.

Other

The candidate is expected to become a leading figure within algebra research of the department, with the potential for building bridges to the other research in the department. A junior candidate is expected to be actively working on establishing a large network, while a senior candidate is expected to have already established a large network. The candidate should also actively contribute tot he workings of the department, and participate in student recruitment activities.

3 - Job profile

PhD in Mathematics

The candidate is expected to subscribe to the university’s vision of education. (The full text in relation to this is available on the university website.)

Every initial appointment is also dependent on the successful teaching of a trial lesson.

Members of the academic staff who, as title-holders, are charged with teaching assignments, must be able to demonstrate the required knowledge of the language of instruction for the relevant course units. Example: When a course unit is taught in English, the candidate is required to have the appropriate certificate.
