"artificial intelligence in automated railwayscheduling"
at the next possible date. We are offering you a contract for the duration of 3 years with the option of extension.
We are collaborating with DB Netz AG (Deutsche Bahn) in a research project to develop novel algorithms for the automaticcreation of railway timetables.
DB Netze has a unique leadership role in the application of algorithms for automated railwayscheduling and currently runs a significant portion of freight traffic using schedules created by artificial intelligence.
The research project
In the last years, a large portion of freight railway traffic in Germany has switched to automated timetables.
The task ofautomating the schedules of passenger trains poses a not yet solved challenge, as these are more interconnected, andcurrent algorithms are not performing well on this task, especially at the scale of the German railway network.
Newalgorithmic directions need to be explored, e.g., using decompositions, heuristics, column generation, and novelcombinatorial algorithms as well as machine learning-based approaches that mimic the solutions of human planners. Anotherimportant research direction is the development of intelligent algorithms which can adjust timetables to disturbances thatoccur during railway operations. Here speed, as well as the robustness of the algorithm, is key.
Due to our close collaborationwith DB Netze, we have the unique opportunity to quickly test new approaches under realistic circumstances. Successfulapproaches will likely be used in practice.
- Master in computer science, mathematics, or related fields with a strong background in artificial intelligence,combinatorial optimization, and operations research
- Good programming experience in several programming languages and the ability and willingness to quickly learnnew ones
- Experience with C++ and Python is desirable
- Good experience with Linux and Shell-Scripting
- Good organizational skills and the ability to work independently
- Very good cooperation and communication skills and ability to work as part of a distributed team in an internationaland interdisciplinary environment
- Excellent communication skills in English are mandatory
- Salary in line with pay group 13 of the Collective Agreement for the Public Service (TV-L)
