The research group on “Optimization” of Prof. Dr. Thomas M. Surowiec at the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science is currently accepting applications for a
Research Assistant (PhD student).
The position is offered for a period of three years, assuming the candidate has not previously spent time as a Ph.D. student elsewhere. The starting date is as soon as possible after the closing date for accepting applications. The position is part-time (50 % of regular working hours) with salary and benefits commensurate with a public service position in the state Hesse, Germany (TV-H E 13, 50 %).
In addition, the candidate is expected to provide support in the organization, preparation, and execution of research and teaching, especially in mathematical optimization. This includes holding recitations and tutorials and assisting in practical training and seminars for courses in mathematics, operations research, and computer science. Participation in the academic self-governance of the department is also expected.
The position is limited to a time period deemed adequate for the completion of a doctoral degree. As part of the assigned duties, there will be ample opportunity to conduct the independent scientific research necessary for the completion of a doctorate. The limitation complies to § 2, 1 WissZeitVG.

The successful applicant will hold an MSc-degree or equivalent in mathematics or a related relevant discipline with a focus on mathematical optimization or applied mathematics. Experience with the implementation of numerical algorithms is expected. In addition, the successful applicant will have experience in one of the following areas: PDE-constrained optimization, non-smooth optimization, variational inequalities, stochastic optimization or statistics. Extensive experience with numerical non-linear optimization is also desirable.
